It is an assessment method that allows registered training organisations (RTO) to assess previous studies, work experience and life experience against the competencies and requirements of a formal qualification.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a nationally recognised competency evaluation process. Identifying, documenting, assessing and certifying prior non-formal and informal knowledge and experience. In order to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning outcomes.

RPL As A Learning Process

RPL as a learning process is for self-improvement, personal development, and self-actualization. RPL as a mechanism of credentialing is a discourse of “efficiency, accreditation, competence, access, transparency, equality of opportunity and mobility”. That uses the language of ‘human capital theory,’ in which individuals make decisions about their own ‘investment’ in their education
